Past
Kenton was born into a soldier's family on a farm outside of Kingsrun, ultimately leading to his voluntary enlistment. He trained at an early age, wanting to be a great honorable soldier like his father. While he wasn't selected for active duty until his early adult years, he spent a lot of time with his uncle as a blacksmith's apprentice.
Childhood
Kenton Sterling was born 56 years before the events of Everlaster in Kingsrun to a moderately wealthy farmer’s family. During the rule of King Arland who was an objectively better ruler of Kingsrun than Rossleigh.
Kenton spent much of his younger life being a mischievous and playful kid. He often spent his time with friends from school. Ricks, Johnny, Piper, and Wilson. He was known to play pranks on the town guard with his friends, leading to him getting caught quite a few times.
His time he spent detained by the town guards ended up teaching him something about the army and how it worked. Indirectly he ended up learning quite a lot about the inner workings as well as meeting some people he would later meet in his service. Of course, the guards were nicer when Arland was running the kingdom.
Kenton raised an interest in metalworking and his father supported him, using his connections with Uncle Dartel to be an apprentice at Sterling Armors. His apprenticeship went on for half a decade, during that time he learned methods in finance, business, and most importantly, how to craft and repair armor weapons and even traps. While he was not known for being the best at making, he was certainly known for his exceptional skills in repairing and restoring, and would often return armors that were damaged in better condition than new. This led him to work with many special weapons of both magic and historical relevance, which taught him much about the craftsmanship of those weapons.
Family
Gwen (Sister)
Kenton had an older sister who died to a bear in the woods outside of Kingsrun, Kenton was only 3 at the time, and his sister was 6. His sister’s existence was mostly lost to history, with no records of her existence being left behind because of her young age. There was only a name and a grave (no body recovered, only bits of her clothing, the bear presumably ate her) for Gwen Sterling.
Gil (Father)
His father Gil Sterling was a retired veteran of the Kingsrun army. Gil often told war stories of heroism when Kenton was a child, however as he grew older (around 15 years of age) those stories became darker and started to reveal the true cost of war. Gil was a detachment commander of about 500 men, and was often responsible for the defense and operation of siege equipment. Kenton learned a lot about arithmetic and complicated siege calculations thanks to his father which no doubt attributed to his overall intelligence. Gil Sterling died at the age of 45 (Kenton was age 23 at the time) to an infection from a wound while farming, an incident involving the horse he was rigging to the plow and got injured on the plow. He died months later unable to recover likely because of his older age. Kenton was on duty at the time and used the remaining funds left in his father’s will to move his mother into a smaller but decent property in Kingsrun that required little work to maintain and would be easier for his mother to live in. Kenton handled a lot of her finances for her even while on duty sending letters back and forth. Luckily Luli Sterling had little debts and was able to live comfortably for the remainder of her life until she died at the age of 51.
Luli (Mother)
His mother Luli Sterling (Surname Jonan), was a caring mother who taught Kenton the importance of ediquette, good manners, honor, generosity, and how to properly behave around royalty. She supported him on his path to the military, thinking that it would be the best way to solidify the discipline and structure that was lacking for some of his early life. She died at the age of 51 to the flu, during winter. Kenton was present at her death (Kenton was age 26 at the time), as he was on leave at the time.
Dartel (Uncle)
Kenton’s Uncle (Father’s Side) Dartel Sterling was the co-owner of a popular blacksmiths franchise called Sterling Armors “Where both your body and silver is safe”. Sterling Armors would make bids on military requests for large orders of armor and weapons. Sterling Armors would monopolize the Human kingdom’s armor trade because of secrets Dartel held close as to how he gets raw materials so quick and cheap as opposed to everyone else. The increase in piracy after the inception of Rossleigh’s rule made it impossible to receive raw materials from Dartel’s contact and Sterling Armors shutdown to avoid going bankrupt and losing all their fortune. Dartel retired and died at the age at 67 of natural causes when Kenton was 35. Kenton was on duty at the time, but go word from a messenger while on his tour.
Kingsrun Guard
After being demoted to Kingsrun guard for some time, he encountered a group of travelers wishing to solve the case of a murderer in the city. Seeing an opportunity to do something for the greater good once again, he jumped at the opportunity to help them. Ultimately leading to his arrest, imprisonment and shortly thereafter, escape.
The Wild Hunt
His occupation as The Wild Hunts military advisor has given him purpose and allowing him to work again in his proud profession of intelligence and strategy.
Trivia
